CAN MAKE A BIT OF AN IMPACT. INTERIOR DESIGN CAN TRANSFORM A TYPICAL HOUSE INTO THE VERY OPPOSITE. YOU CAN KIND OF PLAY IN YOUR OWN HOME AND CHANGE IT AS YOU CHANGE AND EVOLVE AS A PERSON. THINGS DON’T HAVE TO BE STATIC FOREVER. LIZ CONN AND COMPANY IS BASED IN NEWTON. KAHN’S WORK HAS BEEN FEATURED EVERYWHERE FROM ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST TO THE NEW YORK TIMES. YOU NEED TO SEE A LOT OF THINGS UNTIL YOU CAN SORT OF DECIDE WHAT SPEAKS TO YOU. SO THERE’S JUST WAYS TO REALLY BE CREATIVE WITH THINGS THAT PEOPLE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT. CONN DESCRIBES HER STYLE AS FEARLESS, TRADITIONAL. SHE AND HER TEAM BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO EVERYDAY SPACES. CONN SAYS MANY CLIENTS HIRE HER TO GET MORE COLOR IN THEIR LIVES. LOTS OF PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF COLOR. I THINK THEY’RE AFRAID OF A COMMITMENT. YOU KNOW, WE LIVE IN A WORLD NOW WITH SO MANY POSSIBILITIES THAT I THINK THAT IT’S ALMOST PARALYZING FOR PEOPLE. KHAN’S OWN HOUSE BURSTS WITH VIBRANT SHADES. I THINK COLOR AFFECTS MOOD A LOT. IT’S LIKE AN INGREDIENT IN A RECIPE. SO YOU HAVE TO SORT OF, YOU KNOW, BE LIMITED WITH HOW YOU USE IT AND WHERE YOU USE IT. I THINK ACTUALLY, LIKE BLACK WORKS GREAT IN A LOT OF PLACES. I THINK THE CONTRAST BETWEEN BLACK OR LIKE A DARK BROWN AND A CREAMY WHITE ARE ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL AND ELEGANT. AND DON’T BE AFRAID TO MIX PATTERNS, SAYS CONN. PUT AN ORGANIC PATTERN WITH MORE OF A STRUCTURED PATTERN SO YOU KNOW, A STRIPE AND A FLORAL OR, YOU KNOW, MAYBE AN ABSTRACT WITH A GEOMETRIC. I’VE DONE THINGS LIKE WALLPAPER, ALL THE WALLS, THE DORMERS, AND THE CEILING IN THE SAME PRINT. SO IT SORT OF DISGUISES ALL THE CEILING LINES. THERE’S A LOT OF TRICKS TO SORT OF, I CALL IT CLEANING UP THE EDGES SO THAT YOUR EYE IS LESS DISTRACTED BY ALL THESE ARCHITECTURAL BREAKS. CONN ALSO MADE THE MOST OF HER MODESTLY SIZED KITCHEN BY REMOVING THE WALL CABINETRY, SO WE MADE A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO, WHEN WE ADDED THE ISLAND TO NOT HAVE SEATING AT THIS ISLAND, AND REALLY IS BECAUSE IT’S BECAUSE THE DINING ROOM TABLE IS FIVE STEPS AWAY. THIS ALLOWED US TO REALLY GET A LOT OF STORAGE IN THIS AREA. THIS PASSAGEWAY SEPARATING THE KITCHEN FROM THE DINING ROOM HAS A CLEVER DISGUISE. WE PUT THESE BEAUTIFUL CROWNS ON THE DOORS, AND THIS IS OUR REFRIGERATOR. AND THIS IS OUR FREEZER ON THE SIDE. AND THEN ON THIS SIDE WE HAVE A PANTRY. SO YOU CAN ACTUALLY OPEN BOTH DOORS. CONN LOVES HER COLORFUL HOUSE, AND THAT’S THE POINT OF DECORATING. SHE SAYS, DECORATE YOUR HOUSE FOR YOU AND NOT FOR EVERYBODY. I THINK THE BEST HOUSES ARE THE ONES THAT TRULY AUTHENTIC TO THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN THEM, AND THAT’S REALLY WHAT MATTERS THE MOST. WALLPAPER IS BIG, CAN BE DAUNTING FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE. YEAH, BUT LIZ SAYS THAT MANY GOOD OPTIONS ARE PEEL AND STICK SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO COMMIT FOR TOO LONG. I DON’T KNOW, I THINK COLOR IS FUN. HAVE FUN WITH WALLPAPER IS MY ONLY OTHER MAR
