Interior Design: AI Tools According to Planner 5D
Planner 5D CEO Andrey Ustyugov discusses how AI is transforming interior design by enhancing creativity and simplifying the design process.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the world of interior design, empowering both amateurs and professionals with tools that elevate creativity and streamline the design process. With AI advancements like real-time rendering and smart furniture placement suggestions, companies such as Planner 5D are revolutionizing how we approach home design. Whether you’re looking to redesign a single room or overhaul an entire space, AI-driven software offers features that simplify decision-making and provide an immersive design experience, bringing visions to life with ease and precision.
In this interview, we speak with Andrey Ustyugov, the CEO of Planner 5D, a leading platform in AI-powered interior design. Planner 5D’s cutting-edge tools, such as the Design Generator, Smart Wizard, and AI Floor Plan Recognition, enable users to create stunning designs without technical knowledge. These tools guide users through the design process, from suggesting layout options to producing hyper-realistic 3D models of furniture and spaces. AI enhances design accuracy and empowers users to experiment with different styles and ideas, making home design more accessible and engaging.
During our conversation, Ustyugov delves into how AI is reshaping the interior design industry. While AI can automate many aspects of the design process, he emphasizes that it doesn’t replace human creativity or intuition. Instead, these tools serve to complement the designer’s work, offering suggestions and possibilities that enhance the overall outcome. With AI, designers and homeowners alike can experiment with layouts, furniture, and color schemes, creating personalized, functional, and aesthetically pleasing spaces with just a few clicks.
AI’s Evolution in Interior Design
“We’ve been doing this since 2011,” says Ustyugov.
Originally conceived as an easy-to-use tool for homeowners, Planner 5D quickly gained traction. By 2016, with over a million users, the company began exploring AI technology.
“We realized we had a huge amount of data in our hands,” Ustyugov explains.
This led Planner 5D to transition from being a simple tool to a comprehensive platform supporting both homeowners and professionals like designers, architects, and renovation experts.
Since 2016, AI has been at the heart of Planner 5D’s platform, streamlining tasks such as floor plan creation through the company’s AI-driven features. According to Ustyugov, the goal has always been to speed up the design process, particularly for professionals, who can now import floor plans, create 3D models, and customize designs more efficiently.
“It makes the process of importing the floor plan to the planner for 3D way easier and way faster for them,” he notes.
AI as a Complementary Tool
One of the key insights from Ustyugov is that AI isn’t a replacement for human creativity but an assistant that can reduce tedious work. He describes tools like the Smart Wizard and Design Generator as part of Planner 5D’s philosophy to “cover all stages” of the design process.
For professionals, this means Planner 5D can serve as a companion to more complex tools like AutoCAD, speeding up early-stage design and enhancing communication with clients.
Discussing future improvements, Ustyugov highlights the need for better communication tools between designers and clients. Currently, much of the interaction happens via emails or mood boards, but he believes Planner 5D’s evolving AI can make the brainstorming and feedback process more intuitive and efficient.
“With AI, you can cover the first steps, collect data, and then let designers and architects bring their creativity to the project.”
Enhancing Professional Workflows with AI
Planner 5D is not competing with high-end professional tools like AutoCAD. It’s designed to complement them.
“We want to bring another tool in their toolset that they can use together with their professional tools,” Ustyugov explains.
Professionals, especially interior designers and architects, can use Planner 5D to efficiently handle early-stage tasks, such as initial design generation and client presentations, allowing them to focus on more intricate aspects later on. This saves time and improves collaboration between designers and their clients by making the design process more accessible to non-professionals.
One feature highly appreciated by professional users is Planner 5D’s ability to recognize floor plans from photos and convert them into 3D scenes automatically. This AI-driven tool speeds up a traditionally tedious process, allowing designers to import, customize, and manipulate the space quickly.
“The biggest satisfaction we get from our users is from professionals, because it makes the process way easier and faster for them.”
Additionally, the platform offers an extensive product library that professionals can utilize to visualize designs. Users have the option to customize everything from colors to shapes, helping create tailored spaces. According to Ustyugov, this balance between pre-designed elements and customizability is a key advantage:
“They can change basically everything, which is crucial for those dealing with custom projects.”
Looking ahead, Ustyugov believes that the future of AI in interior design will focus heavily on improving communication between designers and clients. He stresses that while tools like Planner 5D have already streamlined many tasks, there’s still room for AI to make client feedback and brainstorming sessions more efficient.
“We believe that using tools like Planner 5D is way better for professionals to collect feedback and share ideas with clients, compared to mood boards and sketches.”
As AI evolves, Planner 5D is committed to refining these collaborative tools, ensuring that both professionals and their clients can seamlessly work together to bring design visions to life.
