‘While a guest room is a commonly overlooked space, there are many easy steps you can take to make this room more inviting and comfortable for your guests staying the night,’ says Ayan Abdi, product specialist at Zinus.
Adam Black, co-founder of Button & Sprung, adds, ‘Guest bedrooms are among the most cluttered in the house. If your spare room also multitasks as an office space then it is one of the hardest-working rooms in the house, switching between functional and guest-ready at a moment’s notice. For this reason, it’s important to make the transition easy.’
1. Put in a sofa bed if space is an issue

‘If you don’t have a dedicated guest bed, consider investing in a sofa bed with a high-quality mattress to ensure your guests wake up feeling rested,’ says Alex Bridgman, CEO of Bridgman.
Ayan at Zinus adds that multifunctional pieces of furniture in general are perfect for a small guest room, ‘If space is limited, consider incorporating dual-purpose furniture to provide you with ultimate space maximisation. A sofa bed, in particular, can serve two functions; it can offer a comfortable chill-out space during the day and a sumptuous, extra bed for the night.’

And consider adding a soft, cosy rug by the bed for a touch of warmth underfoot.’

They won’t be able to wait to get into bed and you may even get a slow ease-in to breakfast duties as they luxuriate in comfort well into the morning!’
3. Prepare enough towels

Make sure that your guests have enough towels – and make sure they are some of your best bath towels with a soft, fluffy finish to really nail the hotel-like luxurious feel and show your guests how much you care about them.

4. Put in a comfortable bed

A comfortable bed is a must, especially if your room is often used by guests. If you can’t justify a new frame, invest in a new mattress. Choose a strong classic style that won’t date and position centrally for easy access and maximum impact.
‘If storage is pivotal, pick a divan over a classic bed frame,’ Adam at Button & Sprung advises. ‘This will allow you to maximise the storage space available without taking up any additional floor space; which is especially important for small bedrooms. Drawer storage seamlessly blends within the divan base to safely store away any bedroom essentials.’

‘All guest beds should have four standard pillows, so that guests have the option of sleeping with either one or two,’ recommends Jo James, founder and creative director of Bedfolk. ‘If you want to go all out, you could even offer a soft/medium and a medium/firm on each side so guests are able to create their perfect comfort level.’
‘Another absolute must bedroom design tip is a pair of square pillows,’ continues Jo. ‘This is both for practical purposes (reading, morning cup of tea) and to make the bed look extra comfortable and plump. A throw adds comfort, texture and a subtle splash of colour. It is also a great extra layer for colder nights and the perfect light layer (partnered with a flat sheet) in the warmer months.’

In small spaces, a slim, comfy cabin bed will probably take up much of the floor space, so work everything else around this.
