MERCER ISLAND, Wash. — The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where many of us gather to cook, eat, and spend time. They should be a mix of style and function. To help achieve both, Interior designer Keri Petersen shared her top tips and tricks.

“A well-designed kitchen is all about flow,” Petersen said.

Make sure you keep the areas between your fridge, stove, and sink accessible. The available space will make cooking and cleaning a breeze.

Next, don’t skimp on storage.

“Use deep drawers for pots and pans, pull-out shelves for easy access, and dividers to keep everything organized,” Petersen said.

You can use open storage to add charm and show off your personality. To achieve a designer touch, add a beautiful backsplash or statement lighting.

“Combine overhead lighting for brightness, under cabinet lighting for function, and beautiful pendants for ambiance,” Petersen said.

Finally, choose materials that look good and work hard.

“Quartz countertops are durable and easy to maintain, while satin finish cabinets hide fingerprints,” Petersen said.

Good design makes life easier. Focus on a smart layout, storage, and beautiful finishes to create a space you love.
