Audrey Hepburn’s ’70s bedroom embodies coastal elegance

From classic coastal chic to 2025 coastal grandmother, the seaside is a constant source of inspiration for breezy, effortlessly stylish interiors. Though the coastal look has been reinvented as a trend hundreds of times, its roots are in timeless decor principles that never date. For proof, look no further than Audrey Hepburn’s Swiss bedroom.

Archival images of the master suite at La Paisible from 1971 are a masterclass in decorating a coastal bedroom. It features a bed upholstered in white and blue toile, surrounded by circular white wicker tables. White curtains and a blue carpet continue the pared-back color palette. A gold-framed portrait and a colorful painting add a touch of interest to the walls. Yellow flowers are the perfect stylistic addition.

Design expert Lena Gierasinska waxes on the timelessness of coastal decor. She states: ‘The popularity of coastal-style interiors has endured for many years.’
